Frequently asked questions
Why do the peaks not match the horizon exactly?
The most common reason is that the sensors need to be initialized again or recalibrated. Accuracy can also be affected by GPS, the magnetic compass, or obstacles in the view.
Why is the compass not responding or pointing in the wrong direction?
If the compass in the app is not responding or points in the wrong direction, first check whether it works in another app, such as Google Maps. If it does not, the issue may be with the device sensors or their calibration. It can also help to close and reopen the app, or restart your phone. Make sure you are not near metal objects or magnets, such as a magnetic phone case, which can interfere with the compass. On some devices, briefly moving the phone in a figure-eight pattern can also recalibrate the compass.
When should I calibrate the app?
We recommend calibration on first use, after a major change of location, or any time the displayed peaks do not match reality.
Why does the app not rotate or not work correctly when the orientation changes?
The app uses screen rotation in both portrait and landscape mode, and if rotation is locked in the system, it may not behave as expected. Check whether screen rotation lock is enabled and turn it off if needed. You can usually find it in the phone's quick settings under the lock or rotation icon, or in display settings.
Why can't the app see my location or why is it inaccurate?
Check whether the app has permission to access your location and whether precise location is enabled on your phone. Accuracy may be worse in forests, deep valleys, between buildings, or when the GPS signal is weak. Moving to a more open area and waiting a short moment can help the location become more accurate.
Why does the app ask for access to location or sensors?
The app needs your location and device sensors to correctly determine where you are, which direction you are facing, and which peaks or objects should be shown. Without these permissions, key features may not work correctly or may not work at all.
Why can the display become inaccurate in bad weather or dense terrain?
Accuracy can be affected by fog, low visibility, dense forest, tall buildings, metal objects nearby, or a weak GPS signal. In these conditions, we recommend using manual calibration instead of automatic calibration and adjusting the sensors by hand.
Why can't I see some peaks or points of interest?
What is displayed depends on your current filter settings, distance range, zoom level, and the available data for the area. Some objects may be hidden because of the selected distance or the type of places being shown. Try adjusting the filters, zoom, or display range.
Does Hill Explorer work offline?
Yes. The app can be used without an internet connection, but you need to have the map data downloaded in advance. Download the specific map data for the continent you are in or plan to visit. Without it, the app will not work properly when you are offline.
How can I improve the clarity of displayed peaks?
Adjusting the display distance or zoom can help. In the app settings, you will also find a range of options and filters that let you tailor the display for the best possible clarity, especially in areas with a larger number of peaks and objects.
Does the app work on every phone?
Most features depend on the quality of your device sensors and its support for rotation and location services. On some phones, the compass, GPS, or orientation may be less accurate, which can affect how the app behaves.
Can the app drain the battery more quickly?
Yes, power consumption can be higher during longer use because the app works with location, sensors, and the display. If you want to save battery, lowering screen brightness, closing other demanding apps, or using the app only when you really need it can help.
Is the data about peaks and places always up to date?
We try to use the highest-quality and regularly updated data possible, but we cannot guarantee that it will always be complete or fully up to date. In the field, we recommend treating the app as a practical helper, not as the only source of information.
How can I report a bug or inaccurate data?
If you find a bug, an incorrectly displayed object, or a problem with how the app works, contact us through the contact page. It helps if you include as many details as possible, such as the place, a description of the issue, your phone model, and optionally a screenshot.
Is the app intended for navigation?
No. The app is mainly intended for identifying peaks and points of interest in the landscape. It is not meant to replace navigation tools, hiking maps, or safety equipment in the mountains.
Can I download and use the app for free?
Yes, you can download and use the app for free in the basic version, which offers full-featured and very usable functionality. Some advanced features are available as a reward, for example after watching an ad or supporting us on social media, and some may be available only in the paid version.
